Best Products is all about informing your shopping decisions to help empower you to find standout products that are actually worth your hard-earned dollar. As our beauty editor, I’ve tested dozens of hair dryers on the market, but no matter how many brands try to dupe Dyson, no one has managed to dethrone the Dyson Supersonic hair dryer from its permanent spot in my haircare routine.

I’ve been a big fan of the Dyson hair dryer since 2020 and previously called it a 10/10 product worth the splurge. Four years later, my opinion on the in-demand Dyson hot tool is still absolutely glowing. I have even introduced many hard-to-please family members to the magic of the Dyson Supersonic hair dryer. (My mom and I would argue over who gets to keep the Supersonic in their bathroom, but she’s since been given her own because I couldn’t deal with sharing anymore.)

Beyond the lightweight (1.8 lb) feel, futuristic yet chic design, and fun colorways, the inclusive magnetic attachments elevate the Dyson hair dryer above its competitors. Since five types of Dyson Supersonics are available, plus several attachments, I put together a guide differentiating each hair dryer model and magnetic attachment from the others.

Dyson Hair Dryer Models

Last year Dyson introduced the Supersonic Origin Hair Dryer. The barebones model comes with a single attachment: the Styling Concentrator. I’ll touch on each attachment shortly, but like the other Supersonic hair dryers, the Origin features three speeds and four temperature settings, including a cold shot. This is the ideal Dyson hair dryer for someone who doesn't need much styling variety, like those who only want to blowout their straight and wavy tresses.

Next up is the OG Supersonic Hair Dryer, which wins me over with every use. Like the Origin, it has the same speed and temperature settings and comes with a Styling Concentrator. However, the inclusion of four extra attachments and a protective case help justify the higher price tag. Additionally, the Supersonic has plenty of gorgeous colorways to select from, such as Nickel/Copper, Prussian Blue/Rich Copper, and the new limited-edition Onyx Black/Gold.

Dyson has two professional-grade hair dryers, but only this version can be purchased by non-professionals. Like the previously mentioned Supersonic, it has three speed settings — high, medium, and low — along with four heat settings ranging from 82 to 212 degrees Fahrenheit.

What differentiates this model from the other Supersonic models are the durability and number of attachments. Dyson claims the hardened, sturdy finish materials of the Supersonic Professional Edition hair dryer are designed to last longer in salon environments compared to the other consumer-focused models. So if you're shopping for a hairstylist gift or want to ensure the next hair dryer you purchase is truly professional-grade, this is the hair dryer for you.

A bonus: This is the only Dyson hairdryer model that comes with a washable heavy-duty filter that captures tiny particles from styling products, like hairspray.

The Nural is Dyson’s latest hair dryer offering. Dyson's best-in-class model uses innovative technology to automatically adjust settings to protect the scalp, enhance shine, and prevent heat damage.

This Dyson hair dryer even comes with a built-in accelerometer that identifies when the tool is placed down so it can minimize airflow and deactivate the heater. It’s also equipped with a sensor that instinctively recognizes each of the five Dyson hair dryer attachments for optimal styling. We may not have flying cars like in The Jetsons or DeLorean time machines created by Doc Brown, but at least beauty lovers can enjoy styling their tresses with a high-tech hot tool that helps minimize heat damage.

The Dyson Supersonic Nural Hair Dryer has five attachments and is available in three gorgeous colors, including a special edition Strawberry Bronze/Blush Pink, Vinca Blue/Topaz, and Ceramic Patina/Topaz.

The Best Dyson Hair Dryer Attachments, According to Our Beauty Editor

When you order a Supersonic, your hair dryer comes with various magnetic attachments. Here are my honest thoughts on those Dyson accessories, including how to use each one.

All five Supersonic hair dryers include the styling concentrator. It's a classic attachment that features a relatively small opening for more intentional styling versus a natural drying effect. The design also ensures you can effectively style your hair by sections without disturbing other areas that haven't been touched or are pin curled.

The styling concentrator provides a strong, more concentrated air flow that helps smooth strands for a sleek look or set curls for bouncy blowouts. It's an equally fantastic attachment for styling bangs.

Found in the Dyson Supersonic Origin, Supersonic, and Nural. The Professional Edition includes a more powerful version that's available for both regular consumers like you and I, along with salon owners and hairstylists.

Opt for the smoothing nozzle over a styling concentrator for achieving a more natural, laidback look. Consider this your go-to Dyson hair dryer attachment for days you're in a rush, like after the gym or heading to the office. This Dyson hair dryer attachment helps diffuse the air and straight, wavy, and loose curl patterns don't require a hairbrush to style your hair. You can simply use your fingers to help comb through hair. Remember this is for casual, undone looks, so if you desire a sleek straight effect use the styling concentrator instead.

Compatible with the Dyson Supersonic and Nural, and the Professional Edition.

Looking to enhance your curls, coils, and waves? The Dyson diffuser will become your new best friend for shaping textured hair without frizz and tangles. It has a large circular shape that provides maximum coverage for a quicker dry without heat damage. In our guide to the best hair diffusers, celebrity hairstylist Kee Taylor previously explained that diffusers provide multidirectional airflow and help create volume and body.

This Dyson hair dryer attachment emits a gentler airflow while on the lowest heat and air velocity setting. It's safe to use a higher heat setting as necessary, but I suggest using the low-velocity of airflow setting to avoid accidentally blowing out your curls. Don't worry: it provides even heat distribution and is incredible at drying hair quickly.

The Dyson diffuser comes with the Supersonic hair dryers, and the Professional Edition includes a similar version with longer prongs. The Nural model has an upgraded version that emits two types of airflow: one designed with wavy hair in mind and the other for tighter curl patterns.

The wide tooth comb is my go-to Dyson hair dryer attachment. It boasts widely spaced teeth with curved edges that enable me to smooth out my roots without accidental scratches or discomfort. When paired with my favorite Fairy Tales Detangling Spray, knots and tangles are non-existent.

I can attest it does an excellent job of detangling textured hair without complicating things with a paddle or boar bristle brush. And as every naturalista knows, our hair is notorious for shrinking when dry, but the Dyson wide tooth comb helps stretch the hair without damaging our curl pattern.

Those with looser curl patterns, waves, and even straight hair could use the wide tooth comb for quick styling, but it's not necessary. I've tested it on my wavy extensions and enjoy how quickly it smoothes everything out before going back and styling with my rotating curling iron. But I can easily get away with using the smoothing nozzle instead for a more lived-in look.

The wide tooth Comb attachment works with the Dyson Supersonic, Nural, and Professional Edition.

Next up is the Dyson flyaway hair dryer attachment that looks like a curved hook. The unique shape helps lift longer hair and hides flyaways, making it my go-to for smoothing my strands for sleek looks. It's my second favorite attachment that I originally used on special occasions, but now consider it a must-have for achieving slicked back hairstyles and minimizing frizz along my hairline and part without using a wax stick.

My trick is to use the cold shot setting and slowly run the attachment along my hair. It's important for some of the loose hairs to lift up onto the attachment before running the tool down from the roots to the tips of my hair for the smoothest effect.

The flyaway is compatible with the Dyson Supersonic, Nural, and Professional Edition.

High heat can fade color-treated hair, so Dyson's solution is the gentle air attachment that emits a light airflow most ideal for color-treated, fine, or thin hair. Those with sensitive scalps will also appreciate this hair dryer attachment.

Of course, anyone with all hair types can use this attachment as they see fit. For example, the gentle air attachment is a solid pick for concentrating your hair dryer at your roots and styling with your fingers. It can also be used to help style face-framing layers, bangs, wavy hair, or the ends of your hair for a salon-worthy blowout effect.

The gentle air attachment works with the Dyson Supersonic, Nural, and Professional Edition hair dryers.
